The Smurfs

Blue and cute, standing only three apples high, the Smurfs value team spirit, friendship, tolerance, humor, working together and respect for nature. They might be hard to tell apart at first, however, each Smurf has his or her own particularity. They live in a village full of mushroom-shaped houses, hidden in the heart of a magic forest where few people venture to go. Born in a comic book in 1958, Peyo’s little blue characters are spreading happiness and good values to kids and families across the entire world, reaching an incredible 95% of global brand awareness. Since the 80’s, the Smurfs have become an iconic pop-culture phenomenon that appeal to all generations, whether children discovering them for the first time or adults remembering good old memories appealing to their inner childhood nostalgia. The Smurfs animated series (2021) is airing worldwide on Nickelodeon, on local free-to-air channels and is available on Netflix. A new Smurfs movie produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Animation and starring Rihanna as Smurfette was released in July 2025.

CGI

An explosive box of adventures and humor.

The material and art denominated as CGI is referring to the style associated to the CGI TV series, The Smurfs (2021). Using pure Smurf DNA from the comic books, the CGI TV series aimed at girls and boys (4 to 11) is pushing the charm and absurdity of the original to even greater heights, fitting in perfectly with Today's faster-paced times.

On a design point of view, characters and art denominated as CGI Style are referring to all Computer-Generated Images created by Studio Peyo.

Classic

An evergreen classic loved by generations of kids and nostalgic adults.

The material and art denominated as Classic is referring to the worldwide famous look of The Smurfs as designed and drawn by Peyo and other cartoonists from Studio Peyo since 1963 until Today. This design was the inspiration for the globally acclaimed classic animated cartoon (1981-1989) produced by Hanna-Barbera.

On a design point of view, characters and art denominated as Classic Style are referring to the most commonly known look of The Smurfs, excluded from the CGI.

VINTAGE

The charm of Peyo's early work.

The material and art denominated as Vintage is referring to the early Smurf design created by Peyo (from 1958 to early 1960’s), as they were mainly appearing within the Johan & Peewit comic books and The Smurfs mini comic books series (“Les Schtroumpfs - Mini récits”, originally named in French language) as it was first published.

On a design point of view, characters and art referred as Vintage style have a different look and a different palette of colours from the assets referred as Classic.

Smurfs (2025) by Paramount Pictures

The production services of Smurfs (2025), directed by Chris Miller and starring Rihanna as Smurfette, were handled at Nickelodeon Animation Studio, with animation production provided by Cinesite. Peyo's drawings inspired many of the creative choices taken with the film's look, including the incorporation of action lines and comic thought bubbles, as well as "a fun and buoyant animation style, with plenty of squash and stretch.

3 Movies with Sony Pictures (2011, 2013, 2017)

The success of our little blue friends exploded onto the big screen in 2011 with the worldwide release of a first live-action/computer-animated movie. The Smurfs, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation. A second motion picture entitled The Smurfs 2 was released in 2013. In Spring 2017, our favourite characters spoiled us again with a totally new feature-length animated CGI adventure entitled Smurfs - The Lost Village.

Characters

Papa Smurf

Papa Smurf is the village chief. He is 542 years old and easily recognizable by his white beard and red clothes. He’s a wise old Smurf, who tries as much as he can to stop the Smurfs acting like crude humans. He is an experienced alchemist, and often saves the Smurfs from danger.

He is the leader of the group and all of the Smurfs look up to him. He keeps them in line, solving their arguments, reprimanding them when necessary, and sometimes losing his temper in the process. In turn, the Smurfs run directly to him whenever there’s a crisis. His genius is that he’s able to find a solution to every situation. When Papa Smurf is busy or isn’t around, things have a tendency to fall apart and chaos ensues.

Despite his age, Papa Smurf is just as energetic as the other Smurfs, who are mere kids at 100. He can do magic and he has an impressive laboratory where he creates potions.

Papa Smurf
Smurfette

Smurfette was originally created by Gargamel as one of his evil plots to cause trouble amongst the Smurfs. She had a big nose and wild dark hair. Using his magic, Papa Smurf transformed her into the charming Smurfette she is today. Her charm and luscious locks melt the hearts of all the Smurfs. She’s one of a kind, full of feminine grace and frivolous.

But don’t underestimate her! She is also a smart, capable and brave leader! She’s curious, independent and enterprising, always ready to take part in new adventures.

Smurfette has got a great sense of humour and a knack for witty comebacks. She’s also a sensitive soul with a kind heart and an endless capacity for empathy.

For a long time, she was the only girl in the Smurf universe, but that’s no longer the case …

Smurfette
Brainy

Brainy is the only Smurf who takes everything seriously! He thinks that he’s smarter than he really is and is convinced that he’s smarter than everyone else. He doesn’t suffer from self-doubt and always refuses to accept when he’s wrong. He spends his time preaching to others, incessantly mumbling old quotes and rules. Whatever Papa Smurf says is, for him, absolutely sacred.

Brainy isn’t much of an original thinker though, and he isn’t a genius, but don’t tell him that! He’s not even much of a scientist, though he pretends to be. What he does have is a phenomenal memory.

Brainy follows the rules exactly and wishes the others would too, giving them long, drawn-out explanations. And even though his friends like him, they think he can be a real pain in the smurf sometimes!

Brainy
Hefty

Hefty by name, and hefty by nature! Hefty has a heart tattooed on his arm, making him easy to spot. He keeps fit by doing just about every sport. If something difficult has to be done, you can count on him.

The Smurfs count on Hefty for his strength, asking him to help with chores. He’s not a superhero, but he believes that with great strength comes great responsibility. His bulging muscles make him feel protective of and responsible for his fellow Smurfs, even if they don’t believe they need protecting.

Hefty’s biggest weak spot? Smurfette. Whilst all the Smurfs adore Smurfette, Hefty has a huge, secret crush on her—though secret in his mind only. He’s very shy around her, fumbling with his words and turning bright red.

Hefty
Handy

Handy originally built Diaper Daddy as a robot to handle Baby’s diaper-changing needs. So like any other robot, he’s a little stiff and formal. He speaks in short sentences and has a monotone voice.

DD doesn’t realise his own strength, or that he should limit it. He can pick up a tree trunk, juggle barrels, or even open a locked door by pulling it off its hinges. He has little to no sense of humour, and does not see the point of laughing.

He is extremely protective of Baby. Nobody knows if DD experiences real emotions or not, but he appears to feel some sort of tenderness when he’s around the cute little Smurf, and would do anything to defend him from danger.

Handy
Vanity

With a flower in his hat and a mirror in his hand, Vanity is the Smurf who cares the most about his appearance. Delicate and sensitive, he is proud of his good looks and spends his time talking fabrics with Smurfette and keeping his complexion fresh. He spends his days lovingly gazing at himself in the mirror. And if, by accident, his mirror breaks, he is the unhappiest Smurf.

The other Smurfs turn to him for advice on style and fashion, considering him the undisputed expert. He loves to give advice, whether or not it’s asked for. Vanity’s keen attention to detail can be extremely useful when the Smurfs are in a fix, and sometimes it even saves the day.

Vanity
Chef

You can spot Chef Smurf from a mile off: he’s the one wearing a chef’s hat and a spotless white apron. You can also smell his house from a mile off: the smell of delicious warm buns, crusty brioches and every type of cake and tart. The Smurfs absolutely love the various creations of this talented cordon bleu.

He is the master of the kitchen and the Smurf that everybody loves. There’s nothing Chef can’t cook or bake or whip up, though sometimes his choices are a bit experimental. Chef is particularly good at baking, his cakes and tarts are tremendous! His reputation is untouchable in this domain and he guards his recipes preciously.

Chef
Jokey

For Jokey, every day is April Fool’s Day! He lives for jokes and pranks. In his eyes, nothing is sacred and there’s no inappropriate time for a good laugh. He does have quieter, more serious moments, but they never last for long.

His all-time favourite gag is giving gift boxes that explode in the other Smurf’s face. And even though the other Smurfs know what he’s up to, they still can’t help it. That infernal box always ends up in someone’s hands! Jokey thinks that laughter is the cure for everything, so he has a closet filled with an endless supply of joke boxes. He believes that he’s doing the world a service by keeping things light.

Jokey
Grouchy

No matter what you say or suggest, Grouchy will be against it on principle. He spends most of his time sulking in the corner, interrupting the others with systematically negative comments. On the face of it, you’d think he likes no one or anything. But deep down, he has a heart of gold.

Long ago, Grouchy was stung by a Bzz fly. Maybe he was allergic to the sting. In any case, every single day since then, Grouchy has woken up on the wrong side of the bed. He goes around with a scowl on his face, his arms hanging at his side, or crossed on his chest, as he mutters to himself about all the things he hates.

His one weakness? He finds it impossible to hide his love for Baby Smurf, who reaches right past Grouchy’s wall of grumpiness and puts a little glow into his heart.

Grouchy
Clumsy

Clumsy can’t walk across the room without falling flat on his face. He is constantly dropping things and tripping over his own feet or thin air. One might think that Clumsy would be covered in cuts and bruises, but miraculously, he never hurts himself. Sometimes, his clumsiness even manages to get the Smurfs out of a bad situation.

Clumsy takes his falls in good stride; it’s just part of who he is. The other Smurfs have grown used to being around Clumsy, discreetly helping him steer clear of danger. Papa Smurf, on the other hand, won’t let Clumsy anywhere near his lab.

Despite his numerous mishaps, it’s impossible to be angry with Clumsy for long. He might just be the most sensitive, kind, and empathetic Smurf of them all.

Clumsy
Gargamel

Gargamel is a nasty, sneaky and hypocritical wizard who lives in a horrible hovel in the heart of the forest. He hates the Smurfs and spends his life doing everything in his power to capture them. Luckily for them, he also happens to be very stupid, so they have always been able to escape. But be careful, he has sworn revenge.

He is driven by a desire for riches and power as well as a bottomless thirst to capture Smurfs. This fixation started long ago when he dreamed of putting a Smurf into his cauldron to make a philosopher’s stone, which turns lead into gold.

Gargamel can do magic, but he’s not the best wizard around. In the greater community of wizards and witches he’s considered a bit of a laughing stock, and there are many complaints about his magic skills. His mother, known simply as “Mummy,” is a witch who drops in unannounced to nag at him and cook inedible dinners.

He’s also a cheapskate who refuses to spend a single cent beyond the absolute minimum. His manners are atrocious, this is one fellow you really don’t want to be sitting across from at dinner!

Gargamel
Azrael

This flea-bitten cat is Gargamel’s scapegoat. He follows the wizard everywhere, hoping his master will one day catch a tasty little Smurf and throw it to him to eat. He is a permanent menace for any Smurfs who happen to wander too close to Gargamel’s hut. He has been stuck with Gargamel ever since he was a kitten. He understands what is said to him but like any cat, he doesn’t listen to his master, because he knows better.

Azrael has a serious dose of cattitude, rolling his eyes at Gargamel’s convoluted plans, or yawning when Gargamel is in trouble, although most of the time he’ll stir himself (reluctantly) to save his master at the very last minute.

Azrael and Gargamel share a very transactional relationship. Gargamel needs company and someone he can boss around to compensate for his feelings of inadequacy. Azrael needs a roof over his head and regular meals.

Azrael
Willow

As the Smufies’ leader and matriarch, Willow holds the same position as Papa Smurf. Willow is into auras, and soothing life energy forces through a sort of Reiki method: laying of hands, waving of herbs, etc. She’s more of a shaman than an alchemist. Willow has an open and trusting nature, and the Smurfies respect and adore her.

As a symbol of her position of authority, she carries a walking stick. But this isn’t just any old piece of wood, it’s a conduit through which she channels her magic powers. In anybody else’s hand, it is just a stick and the only person who can use it to do magic is Willow.

Willow’s energy can heal an injured animal or broken plant, and can also defend herself and the Smurfies. The downside is that once she uses her walking staff this way, she’s exhausted afterwards and must take a moment or two to regain her energy. So, she uses it only in the most pressing of situations.

Willow
Storm

As the fiercest member of the Smurfies, Storm has assumed the role of ‘warrior smurf’. She’s an expert markswoman, an outstanding athlete and highly protective of her band of friends. She’s slow to trust others but once you’re her friend, she’ll always be there for you. From time to time, she can be a little hot headed and a little too eager to fight but she calms down quickly and listens to reason. With a healthy dose of bravado, she’s always up for a challenge. She likes to challenge herself and others to be their best.

Just like a tiny blue Robin Hood, she is able to hit the target with her arrow, blindfolded.

Storm
Blossom

Blossom is the bubbly cheerleader of the bunch, who is always overflowing with positive energy. Since everything excites her and fascinates her in equal measure, Blossom is extremely talkative, which at times can be exhausting for those around her. But she never notices - and no one would dare tell her. She likes to bounce ideas around, talking a mile a minute, wondering what’s the best way to go about doing something. Curious, she’s up for anything, relishing new experiences. So if you ever want to try something crazy, but are afraid to do it alone, ask Blossom and she’ll sign up in no time! She’s a virtually inexhaustible tiny ball of energy!

Blossom
Lily

Lily is very smart and practical, never acts without thinking something through, and has little patience for silliness. Voltaire the dragon is her best friend, he might be ferocious with others but not with Lily. With her, he’s like a faithful pet. The two take long walks, lick each other’s faces, and roll around on the ground together. Whenever Voltaire sees Lily he yelps like a happy puppy and wants her to scratch his belly.

Lily believes that she has an innate talent for communicating with ALL of the animals in the forest. Except she doesn’t understand them as much as she thinks she does. She only gets their intention right about half the time, and the results can be disastrous.

Lily
Lazy Smurf

Meet the Smurf who can sleep just about anywhere. His first thought in the morning is about what time he’ll get back to bed. It’s not that he’s lazy, but just the very idea of work wears him out.

The Smurfs are a hardworking and industrious lot, except for this guy, who is always sneaking off for a nap. Lazy just can’t help it. Like a moth to a flame, Lazy is drawn to the perfect spot for a nap. He’s on an endless quest to do nothing, which, as he likes to say, “is really hard work, if you think about it!”

Lazy Smurf
Farmer

Chef’s meals are so good thanks to Farmer Smurf. He’s in charge of growing and harvesting all the food that the Smurfs eat, and he takes his job very seriously, always talking to his crops to help them grow. He’s easily recognisable in his straw hat and green overalls.

Farmer Smurf is also the go-to-guy if you have a question about plants or how to grow things. Additionally, he’s the village weatherman, able to read signs in the wind of upcoming storms, heat waves, or chills in the air. You can see him in the mornings, searching the skies for clues about the weather that day. It’s rare that he ever gets it wrong.

Farmer Smurf has one other passion beyond his garden: snail racing.

Farmer
Wild Smurf

Wild Smurf lives in the forest, in a hollow tree trunk, and is an untamed loner. He was raised by squirrels after being accidentally dropped in the forest by a stork as a baby. Like a mini Tarzan, he prefers to be free: swinging on vines, climbing trees or riding the river rapids. He gets along fine with his fellow Smurfs and may stop by the village from time to time, but he could never live there full time. Too many rules, too much routine!

Wild Smurf speaks his own tongue, which he learned from the squirrels, though he has picked up enough of the Smurf language to have a basic conversation with them.

Wild Smurf
Baby Smurf

Baby Smurf was delivered to the village by a stork, once upon a blue moon night. He was immediately adopted by the whole Smurf community. He sleeps in a different house every night and can often be seen crawling from one mushroom house to another, ready to settle down for the night. Baby Smurf is very intelligent! He is often more clever than Gargamel and can even drive a tractor (he thought it was a toy). It sometimes happens that when his friends are in trouble, his intelligence and cunning are the key to getting them out of a pickle.

Like any baby, he has a mischievous and reckless side. He’s happiest when he’s playing, sometimes not aware of the danger surrounding him. Luckily he has a knack for getting out of tricky situations, usually without even realising he was ever in trouble. Expect the unexpected with Baby Smurf: anything can happen, and does! He’s full of surprises and spontaneity, and is a chaos-creating machine.
